The 10th edition of the Jimei × Arles International Photo Festival is set to take place in Xiamen, Fujian province from Nov 29 to Jan 12 next year.
This year, the festival will feature 23 exhibitions, showcasing 2,000 works by artists from China, France, Spain, Germany, India, Japan, Canada and the United States. Five exhibitions selected from the Rencontres d'Arles, the prestigious French photo festival held this July, will be presented. These exhibitions cover themes such as artificial intelligence, architectural landscapes and environmental issues.
Works by renowned photographers Masahisa Fukase and Luo Bonian will be exhibited, offering audiences the opportunity to appreciate the artistry of these top photographers.
In addition, the "Crossover Photography" section will feature three exhibitions that provide diverse perspectives from creators in music, video and other fields. The "Jimei × Arles Discovery Award" will present eight exhibitions along with a group show under the "China Pulse" theme, highlighting the work of Chinese photographers. Another exhibition will showcase finalists of the "Jimei × Arles Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image", which aims to discover and nurture young Chinese curators and researchers.
This year, the festival collaborates with smartphone brand Vivo's "VISION+" project and Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu's "Inspiring Moments" photo exhibition, presenting works by global image creators and encouraging photography that reflects everyday life.
The highly anticipated "Jimei × Arles Discovery Award", co-initiated with Xiaohongshu Photography, and "Jimei × Arles Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image", established with luxury giant Chanel, will announce this year's winners during the opening week.
In addition to the award selections, the "Jimei × Arles Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image" will launch a public curatorial course, the "Curatorial Seminar", just before the festival begins. This program will include keynote speeches, group learning and on-site practice, paving new paths for nurturing emerging Chinese curators.
This year, the Jimei × Arles International Photo Festival will focus more deeply on integrating with local culture, exploring the connections between photography and the cultural heritage of Xiamen and its surrounding areas. As an international platform for photographic arts, the festival's 10th edition will also connect with local art and culture through parallel exhibitions and the "Isles Project".
Leading up to the festival's opening and throughout its duration, experts, scholars, artists and curators from around the world will engage audiences with a diverse array of events, including university lecture tours, curatorial seminars, artist talks, workshops, guided tours and performances.
The Jimei × Arles International Photo Festival is a cultural and artistic exchange project between Xiamen's Jimei district and France's Rencontres d'Arles. Since its establishment in 2015, the festival has showcased outstanding photography from around the globe, embodying a spirit of openness and diversity.
