An online launch ceremony for the "Xiamen-Wellington Chinese class" project was held on Nov 25, with government officials from both cities and more than 30 trainees taking part.

The project, initiated in August by the foreign affairs office of Xiamen, Fujian province, and the government of Wellington, capital of New Zealand, aims to strengthen the friendship between the two cities and provide an opportunity to residents in Wellington to learn more about Chinese language and culture.

"A language is a window to a new culture. The Chinese class project will inject a new momentum into the sister-city tie between Xiamen and Wellington," said New Zealand Ambassador to China Clare Fearnley at the ceremony.

Officials said the project will offer a free eight-month basic business Chinese curriculum to people in Wellington. The Center for Language Education and Cooperation of Xiamen University will offer online classes, while Chinese Cultural Center in Wellington will offer language assistance offline.

A meeting to commend role models in Fujian province's fight against the COVID-19 epidemic was held on Nov 25 in the provincial capital Fuzhou, where Cheng Ming, an officer from the foreign affairs office of Xiamen (XMFAO), was honored an "exemplary individual".

Cheng was one of a dozen frontline cadres at XMFAO who have been devoted to epidemic prevention and control work since the outbreak early this year.

During this challenging period, XMFAO has played an important role in reassuring local expats, preventing imported cases, offering international assistance, helping with the resumption of work, and promoting international exchange.
