Xiamen in East China's Fujian province is set to host the 60th World Modern Pentathlon Championships from May 23 to 31, 2020, according to an announcement made at the member congress of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) recently held in Cyprus.
A delegation from Xiamen detailed the coastal city's basic situation and its preparations for the upcoming event, including the venue, hotels and transport.
The Chinese city's pleasant environment and comprehensive facilities delighted the representatives of UIPM's member states and they all praised Xiamen's preparatory work for the event.
The championships will be the first Class A international event that has ever been held in Fujian and more than 1,000 outstanding athletes from over 60 countries and regions are expected to attend the event.
The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises five different events: fencing (one-touch epee), freestyle swimming (200m), equestrian show jumping (15 jumps), and a final combined event of pistol shooting and cross country running (3200m).
The sport has been part of the Olympic Games since 1912 and a world championships for the modern pentathlon has been held annually since 1949.
China announced and implemented on May 15 a policy allowing visa-free entry of foreign tourist groups aboard cruise ships via all cruise ship ports along the country's coastline.
China and Georgia are set to waive visa requirements for travelers starting May 28.
