The Jimei Arles International Photography Festival will return to the city of Xiamen for the second year on Nov 20, and will run through Dec 19.
The opening week will feature exhibitions, performances, and roundtable forums and meetings with experts at the citizens' center of Jimei district and the Three Shadows photography art center's southern chapter in Xiamen.
The event hopes to use these activities to connect the city's multitude of art venues and offer a diverse selection of art experiences that will be accessible to a wide audience.
Based in Beijing, the Three Shadows is China's first non-State professional contemporary art institution focusing on photography. The center also helped organize the festival, which will span a whole month and will feature more than 1,000 works created by 100 international artists.
The main projects will include: Exhibitions from Arles 2016; Jimei x Arles Discovery Award; Asian photography exhibition; Ninagawa Mika solo exhibition; a lecture on Literati Photography – The Lyrical and The Epic; the exhibition Chinese Vintage Prints 1850-1949; collectors’ tales; crossover photography; photography book fair; seminars; and projection activities.
The festival was co-organized by the festival's founders Sam Stourdze and Rong Rong.
Stourdze is also the director of Rencontres d'Arles, a summer photography festival based in Arles, France, which serves as a springboard for photographers and contemporary artists.
Rong Rong is a native of Fujian, born in 1968. He is a photographer himself and the founder and director of the Three Shadows photography art center.
