The RoboMasters Competition 2016 Eastern Division, held by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the All-China Students' Federation and the Shenzhen government, started at Xiamen University on July 23. Twenty-two teams from across 19 colleges and universities participated in the competition to fight for a place in the final games.

RoboMasters demand participants research, design and product robots on their own through persistent team-work, and the team’s robots then join in the shooting games  fighting against one other. On account of the competition’s intense style and the visual impact, it is particularly popular with teachers and students in colleges and universities, science and technology enthusiasts and high-tech enterprises.

This year, the RoboMasters Competition attracted 288 teams from over 160 colleges and universities, totalling nearly 6,000 young engineers. Of them, some 95 teams left after screening and will go on to fight for the championship later. The winning team will be awarded 200,000 yuan ($29,961) provided by Shenzhen DJI Technology Company and the opportunity to intern in DJI Co. as well as access to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to study for masters degree without having to take entrance exams.

Teams in the eastern division include those form Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, Tongji University and Xiamen University. As a "bridge" of communication and cooperation between high-tech enterprises and colleges and universities, the competition represents as a platform for students to show their own work and it is a test of how well they grasp the knowledge of inter disciplinary team-work, said Li Jifang, associate director of the Engineering Technology Centre from the School of Aerospace Engineering, Xiamen University.
