Kazakh delegation visits Xiamen for commerce, trade talks

An 11-member delegation led by Beibit Issabayev, governor of the Zhetisu region in Kazakhstan, paid a visit to the coastal city of Xiamen – located in East China's Fujian province – from May 30 to June 1.

On May 31, Mayor of Xiamen Huang Wenhui met with the delegation and briefed them on his city's economic and social development.

Huang said that Xiamen, as a core area of the Maritime Silk Road and an international comprehensive transportation hub, saw great cooperation potential with Kazakhstan.

Beibit Issabayev noted that 2023 marked the starting year to create another 30-year golden period in China-Kazakhstan relations. He hoped that cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative could be upgraded to deepen the existing friendship of both sides and to benefit the people of both regions.

During the visit, the delegation exchanged ideas with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Xiamen Committee and over 10 local enterprises. They discussed such issues as comprehensive energy, new materials, intelligent manufacturing, logistics, waste sorting and engineering machinery, among other things.

Kazakhstan is known as an important country involved in the Belt and Road Initiative and is an essential node of the international land logistics channel. The Zhetisu region occupies an area of 118,600 square kilometers and is one of the most populous regions in Kazakhstan.

Sports communication between Xiamen, Kiribati highlighted

A delegation from the Republic of Kiribati – an island country in the central Pacific Ocean – recently visited sports and related departments and universities in the port city of Xiamen.

The visitors – who conducted their tour from June 1 to 3 – were led by Moannata Lentaake, chairman of the Sports Special Committee of Parliament in Kiribati.

Liao Huasheng, Xiamen's vice-mayor, met with the delegation and talked about the modern development of sports in Xiamen. Lin Na, vice-president of the Xiamen People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, attended the activity.

Kiribati's Moannata Lentaake said the beautiful seaside scenery and thriving sports industry in Xiamen were impressive and he called for more communications with the Chinese city in the future.

During the visit, the delegation visited the Physical Education Institute of Jimei University and shared ideas on education and training.

They also visited a marathon track in Xiamen and heard about the city's experience in balancing the development of its sports sector and environmental protection.

Touring the local Gulangyu Island, the delegation is said to have felt the unique charms of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Visit deepens Xiamen, Greece relations

Zhuang Rongliang, vice-mayor of Xiamen city, met with Martinos Mandalidis, consul general of Greece in South China's Guangzhou city, on June 6.

For a long time, Xiamen has focused on taking an innovation-driven road, building an industrial ecosystem that highlights high-end manufacturing and the modern service industries.

The city has been ranked among the top 100 cities worldwide in scientific and technological clusters and intensity, Zhuang said.

Furthermore, Xiamen and Greece possessed advantages and potential for increased communications and cooperation, he added.

It was to be hoped that through the visit, the two regions would further deepen cooperation in areas such as commerce and trade, the marine economy and the digital economy, as well as the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Greek envoy said that Xiamen left a deep impression on him and he hoped that the two regions can expand practical cooperation in various fields such as low-carbon and green development, scientific and educational talent exchanges and the extension of sea and air routes to promote win-win development.
