The Memorial Hall for "Little Balu Heroes" ("Balu" refers to the Eighth Route Army) is located at the Hecuo Primary School in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province.
Above the entrance are the Chinese characters for "We are the heirs of Communism", and the name of the memorial hall inscribed by General Ye Fei, commander of the "Aug 23" fight in 1958 and former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
On the two sides of the hall are musical notations for the anthem of the Young Pioneers of China and Xiamen Song (Ode to Xiamen).
The memorial hall displays over 140 pictures depicting little heroes' deeds, as well as many items they used in their studies, work, and lives.
The little heroes were 13 Chinese Young Pioneers from the Xiamen Heshan No 4 Central Primary School (now Hecuo Primary School), who decided to stay behind and support the front during the "Aug 23" fight.
In 1961, a movie entitled Little Balu Heroes based on their stories was released. Its theme song, We Are the Heirs of Communism, was well-received across the country and later become the anthem of the Young Pioneers of China.
